...I can't use the train that they say I have booked because it is overnight. I'm not a mad ranter - I am sure that eventually I will sort this out - but I suspect that I will have to buy more expensive tickets via Trainline or other online service, and will probably lose my payments to Trainpal (which are well over £100!)....

Trainline - do not use! You are not protected against cancellation!
...When making bookings with Trainline, there is no way of taking out any form of travel insurance as far as I can see, unlike Eurostar and SNCF (French rail) sites. I have lost £350... the lesson here is, if possible, don't use the UK rail network, but if you have to, then book directly with the rail operators....
