...You can technically compile aseprite from source for free. Libresprite is going to get completely overhauled, though progress on that is slow moving, so the comparison isn't really apt....

...Seems like most people just use aseprite (and it's a good program, so I get it) but if you're on Android or just really cheap like me, there is a free alternative that does most of the same pixel drawing and animation. Look up "Pixel Studio" in the play store. I'm not paid by them or anything, I just absolutely love a good free software....

...Aseprite used to be fully open source. It is available in software packages for Ubuntu (looks like it's called Libresprite). I believe they modified their license at one point and started releasing a paid version with extra functionality. However, most of the most widely used functionality is in the free version....
